What Happens During a
Consultation?
During the first
consultation it is important that a detailed case history is taken.
The herbalist will ask about all sorts of things which may not seem
directly relevant to the current ailment, but there is a reason for
this. The herbalist has to build up a thorough picture of that
particular patient, and understand where the balance of health has
become disturbed.
Usually the herbalist
will want to take the pulse, and have a look at the patient’s tongue
and eyes. Other more ‘conventional’ measurements such as blood
pressure and body mass index may also be taken, and the herbalist
may listen to the patient’s lungs and heart with a stethoscope.
After taking all of the
details, and examining the patient, the herbalist will analyse the
case, identifying the root cause of the problem in discussion with
the patient. The patient will then be given some down to earth
dietary and lifestyle advice, as well as an individually blended
herbal prescription.

The Treatment
In herbal medicine it
is very important that the patient actively participates in
the road to recovering full health. It is not really a question of
popping a pill or swigging some medicine, and carrying on exactly as
before. If one has become ill there is a reason for it, and it is
important that this underlying factor is addressed wherever
possible so that optimal health is maintained. This may mean
some sensible dietary or lifestyle modifications. Don’t worry
though…at the Myrobalan Clinic we are aware that in today’s world we
have to be practical about how these lifestyle changes can be
applied. This is why we have the tag line: ‘ancient wisdom for
modern lives’.
